Motor, not visual, encoding of potential reach targets

چکیده
midpoint of the targets before correcting their movements to the selected target location [4–6]. The mechanisms underlying this ubiquitous behaviour are unclear; it may reflect the simultaneous implementation of multiple competing motor plans (i.e. a motor average of competing movement paths) or the preparation of a single movement towards an averaged visual-spatial target location (i.e. a visual average of target directions). Here, we show that reaching movements toward multiple potential targets reflect the simultaneous implementation of competing action plans. Previous work has shown that multiple competing eye movement plans can be maintained in parallel in oculomotor brain structures (for example [7,8]). Our new results suggest that the same is true for the preparation of complex reaching movements. Motor, not visual, encoding of potential reach targets

Rapid Automatic Motor Encoding of Competing Reach Options.
Mounting neural evidence suggests that, in situations in which there are multiple potential targets for action, the brain prepares, in parallel, competing movements associated with these targets, prior to implementing one of them. Central to this interpretation is the idea that competing viewed targets, prior to selection, are rapidly and automatically transformed into corresponding motor repre...
متن کاملDecoding Movement Goals from the Fronto-Parietal Reach Network
During reach planning, fronto-parietal brain areas need to transform sensory information into a motor code. It is debated whether these areas maintain a sensory representation of the visual cue or a motor representation of the upcoming movement goal. Here, we present results from a delayed pro-/anti-reach task which allowed for dissociating the position of the visual cue from the reach goal. In...
متن کاملCausal evidence for posterior parietal cortex involvement in visual-to-motor transformations of reach targets.
It has been posited that the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is involved in the visual-to-motor transformation for reach planning. Such a transformation is required because in general the retinal information and the arm motor command do not align, for example in the case of non-zero eye/head orientations. Here, we present behavioral data from a patient with unilateral optic ataxia consecutive t...
متن کاملThe Effects of Visual Control and Distance in Modulating Peripersonal Spatial Representation
In the presence of vision, finalized motor acts can trigger spatial remapping, i.e., reference frames transformations to allow for a better interaction with targets. However, it is yet unclear how the peripersonal space is encoded and remapped depending on the availability of visual feedback and on the target position within the individual's reachable space, and which cerebral areas subserve su...
متن کاملSeparating Visual and Motor Components of Motor Cortex Activation for Multiple Reach Targets: A Visuomotor Adaptation Study.
UNLABELLED Ethologically inspired models of movement preparation view the sensorimotor system as sampling information from the environment in a parallel fashion in preparation for multiple potential actions. In support, the configuration of the physical workspace, manipulated by the number or spatial separation of potential targets, has been shown to modulate sensorimotor neural activity. It is...
